Clean Boats Clean Waters

A primary function of The Minong Town Lakes Committee is to administer the Clean Boats Clean Waters Program (CBCW) for its eight member lakes. Most of this work falls to a grant writer and the treasurer.

The grant, which is for $32,000, is awarded to the Town of Minong and the Town disburses it to MTLC four times during the summer; the MTLC treasurer in turn disburses it to the monitors of the eight landings and to the coordinator of the monitors.  In addition to the $32,000, six of the eight lakes contribute at least $1,000 per year for additional expenses and for our DNR grant match.

Each landing is monitored for a minimum of 200 hours (this is the DNR minimum requirement); additional hours are allocated to lakes according to how much the landing is used. For example, in 2023, the landing at the Minong Flowage had 5.64 boats inspected per hour a monitor worked (this is the highest of the eight landings). Several of the landings had fewer than one boat inspected per hour a monitor worked.

Monitors, in addition to checking boats for invasive plants and, when appropriate, encouraging boaters to decontaminate boats and trailers for possible zebra mussels, gather a great deal of data on each boat launched.
